Dearborn Police provide update on officer-involved shooting

Published Aug. 21, 2026

On Friday, Aug. 21, at approximately 2:15 a.m., two plainclothes Dearborn police officers were involved in a shooting while attempting to arrest a suspect near Inkster Rd and Van Born Rd.

Dearborn Police Officers responded to the Pantheon Club near Michigan Avenue and Oakman Boulevard following reports of a man armed with a handgun who was arguing with other individuals.

Officers arrived and made contact with the suspect. The suspect refused to cooperate with officers and fled the area in a flat-bed tow truck.

Officers initially pursued the vehicle in what was a low-speed pursuit. That pursuit was subsequently terminated as plainclothes officers continued to follow and observe the suspect.

The suspect eventually stopped at a gas station in the area. Officers attempted to take the suspect into custody. During that encounter, the suspect produced a handgun and immediately opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire. Two Dearborn Police Officers were struck by gunfire.

Both police officers were transported to a local hospital, and are at home, recovering from non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is currently in custody and remains in critical condition.

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin addressed this morning's event, as well as other high-level security events that have taken place in recent weeks, requiring the expertise of Dearborn Police and partnering agencies.

Chief Shahin and Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud also expressed deep gratitude to the men and women of the Dearborn Police Department, who protect the city through difficult situations with professionalism and poise.

Shahin stated, “This morning, two of our brave officers put themselves in harm's way to protect our community and were shot in the line of duty. While we are deeply relieved and grateful that both officers are expected to make a full recovery, this critical incident is a stark reminder of the immense dangers our officers face every single day to keep Dearborn safe.”

This morning’s event remains an active and ongoing investigation, including a thorough review of the entire incident through available video, physical evidence, witness statements, radio communications, and the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire.

Additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident will be released as it becomes available.
