Hammoud Administration celebrates opening of first business born from new Dearborn WORKS program

On Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud and City of Dearborn officials joined the community at the grand opening of Sewing Your Life, an immigrant, woman-owned and operated sewing school in Dearborn’s Southend. Sewing Your Life is one of the businesses opened by a graduate of the Dearborn WORKS (Women’s Opportunity to Realize their Knowledge and Skills) program, an initiative from the City and the Arab American Women’s Business Council (AAWBC) designed to empower and train local women entrepreneurs.

What started as a solo effort by Nasim Alghuzzy to train and uplift  young women through sewing courses at a historic Yemeni American community center is now a brick-and-mortar training school serving as a dedicated hub for accessible, practical sewing education.

Alghuzzy’s entrepreneurial spirit was identified by the Hammoud administration, who petitioned for a U.S. Department of Labor grant to serve as seed funding for her new business. The grant was approved by Dearborn City Council in July 2025. The Sewing Your Life program, falls under the umbrella of the Dearborn WORKS grant program.

Mayor Hammoud stated, “Nasim’s story is truly inspirational and like many Dearborn entrepreneurs, she embodies the spirit of resilience, innovation, and community pride that defines our city. We are inspired by hardworking, entrepreneurial women like Nasim who help drive Dearborn’s economy. The City is committed to supporting women leaders like her and ensuring that, through programs like Dearborn WORKS, we continue to see more successful and impactful businesses that benefit our greater community.”

Alghuzzy is a graduate of the City of Dearborn and the AAWBC’s Dearborn WORKS business bootcamp, an initiative supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and managed through the City of Dearborn. Through Dearborn WORKS, programs like Sewing Your Life continue to receive support and resources as part of an ongoing commitment to help women business owners in Dearborn, such as Alghuzzy, bring their business visions to life. The Workforce & Business Services Division of the City’s Economic Development Department partnered closely with Nasim on her program development, providing continuous support throughout her journey of opening a brick-and-mortar establishment.

Alghuzzy stated, “In the two years since my arrival to the U.S., I have achieved many significant milestones towards my business dreams. I am proud of that progress and deeply thankful to Mayor Hammoud and his administration, as well as my community, for their unwavering support.”

As part of the grant program requirements, Alghuzzy has committed to training up to 50 women in sewing and technical skills at no cost to them. Following the completion of the first sewing cohort, Sewing Your Life will operate as a for-profit business.

Applications for the sewing training program at Sewing Your Life are now open at Dearborn.gov/BusinessResources. Classes are scheduled to begin Nov. 17, 2025.
