Tree Services

Trees are an important part of our city’s infrastructure. They limit energy bills by providing shade in the summer and blocking wind in the winter, help manage flooding, and replace carbon dioxide with the air we breathe. More broadly, they can improve walkability, beautify neighborhoods, promote safer driving, and manage air pollution, making them an impactful investment in public health, community safety, and local economies.

You can estimate the financial value your tree provides using this tool or learn more about how tree coverage varies across Dearborn here.

Dearborn is proud to be recognized as a Tree City USA destination.

Tree Trimming & Tree Removal

Tree Trimming

Curbside trees in Dearborn are trimmed on a cycle to remove deadwood and for overhead clearance. Neighborhoods are notified before trimming. Residents and contractors are prohibited from trimming and removing City trees. If your tree is in need of trimming, call 313-943-2150.

Tree Removal

If the City determines an easement tree must be removed, the homeowner is not charged. A replacement tree will be planted. If you do not want a replacement tree or have had a tree removed and have yet to receive a new one, call 313-943-2150.

Private Property Tree Removal

City ordinance requires that anyone wishing to remove a tree on private property must obtain a permit if the tree(s) is 16 inches in diameter at breast height (DBH). DBH is the tree's diameter measured 4 and a half feet above grade. A permit is not required for dead trees; however, a resident wishing to remove a dead tree will still be required to submit proof, such as a report from a certified arborist, along with their tree removal permit application.

All tree removal permit applications must be accompanied by a report from a certified arborist that contains the following information:

1. Species of tree(s)

2. DBH of tree(s)

3. Location of tree(s), such as front yard, back yard, etc.

4. Overall health and condition of tree(s)

Once the city receives the application, an inspector will assess the tree(s) to determine whether they meet the criteria for removal.

To obtain a permit, residents must complete the Tree Removal Permit Application and email it to treepermits@dearborn.gov. Permit applications are also available in the lobby of the Dearborn Administrative Center and can be submitted in person.
