Jury Duty
**Evening Before Appearance** Verify by telephone that the trial is scheduled to proceed as planned.
On the evening before your scheduled report date, please call the Jury Reporting Line at 313-943-2086
after 4:30 PM to make sure it is still necessary for you to appear.
Qualifications to be a Juror
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Age of 18 years or older
- A resident in the City of Dearborn
- Have not served on a jury in the last 12 months
- Have not been convicted of a felony
Request to be excused or to Postpone Jury Service
If emergency circumstances require that you request a postponement or excusal of your service for any
reason, business or personal, you MUST send a letter to Jury Administration. All requests must be made
in writing along with supporting documentation (e.g., doctors note, school schedule, travel documents,
etc.), include your appearance date, Juror ID number, and a telephone number where we can reach you.

Failure to Appear
If you have not been excused or had your service postponed, you must report for jury service. Any
person who fails to respond could be cited for contempt of court. It is important to respond to all court
notices.
Based on Age
A person 70 years of age or older may claim exemption from jury service in writing, and include a copy
of a valid Michigan driver’s license, and shall be exempt upon making the request.
Security
You will be required to enter the courthouse through a metal detector. Please allow sufficient time for
the security process. Your personal belongings will be x-rayed. Objects such as scissors, pocketknives
and weapons of any kind are not allowed in the courthouse.

How did I get selected?
Potential jurors are selected randomly from the State of Michigan’s Driver License list and Personal
Identification Cardholder list.
What if I no longer live in Dearborn?
Request to be excused in writing may be submitted along with proof of residency (e.g., driver’s license,
utility bill, deed, lease agreement, etc.).
What if I am attending school several hours away from Dearborn or out of state?
Request to be excused in writing may be submitted along with proof of class schedule; include the date
of the end of the academic term.
What if I recently served as a juror in downtown Detroit?
Request to be excused in writing may be submitted along with your proof of service.
What if I am recovering from a procedure or have a medical condition?
Request to be excused in writing may be submitted. Temporary inability to carry out the functions of a
juror does not permanently disqualify you.
What do I wear?
Proper comfortable business attire appropriate for the environment is required.
What if the person does not speak and/or understand English?
Request to be excused in writing may be submitted.

be made as far as possible in advance of the date of the jury service.
