What does the City Clerk’s Office do?

 

Dearborn's City Clerk is responsible for managing the City's records and overseeing all local elections that take place within the city. They manage an office of City employees who help issue and retain required documents for the City and its residents and business owners.

 

The City Clerk's office manages business licenses, dog licenses, and garage sale and block party permits. They also certify birth and death certificates for Dearborn residents in coordination with Wayne County and the State of Michigan.

 

The City Clerk and their office are responsible for administering elections in Dearborn. They oversee all election operations for the city including, but not limited to:

Voter registration & voter list maintenance
Election worker recruitment & training
Storage and technical support for election equipment
Issuance, collection, verification, and tabulation of absentee ballots
Initial reporting of unofficial election results
Secure storage of ballots, once tabulated

The City Clerk is elected by Dearborn voters every four years. 

The Clerk's Office ensures that elections in Dearborn are safe, secure, accessible, and an accurate reflection of the will of Dearborn voters.

In addition to these responsibilities, the City Clerk ensures that all ordinances passed by Dearborn City Council are written into the public record with local newspapers and on the City's website.

To accomplish these duties, the City Clerk chairs the Election Commission, attends all Council meetings as the Clerk of the Council, and maintains a journal of the proceedings at Council Meetings.

George Darany

Meet Dearborn’s City Clerk George Darany

George T. Darany has served Dearborn since 2007 as an elected officeholder but for many years through his volunteer service with groups including Dearborn Rotary, Dearborn Goodfellows, Dearborn Public Schools, Karmanos Cancer Institute, and others.

He served on the Dearborn City Council from 2007 through 2010 and then was Dearborn’s State Representative for six years. He has served as Dearborn City Clerk since January 1, 2016.

Clerk Darany is a twice-past president of the Dearborn Goodfellows and a former Rotarian of the Year. He has been an usher at Sacred Heart Church since 2000 and has been an Executive Officer and member of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce for 30 years.

He is a graduate of Edsel Ford High School and holds a degree in economics from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. George has completed classes at Central Michigan University and is now a Certified Municipal Clerk.

George has been a Real Estate Broker for more than 30 years. From 1986 until 2007, he owned and operated the Classic Trolley Company in Dearborn.
