City of Dearborn selects first 10 homes for free porch, front step rehab, replacement initiative for homeowners
Published May 12, 2025
The City of Dearborn will soon begin work to help homeowners rehabilitate, repair, and replace severely damaged or deteriorating porches and outdoor steps in a program announced last year that is made possible in part through federal grant funding.
The free porch and front step rehab and replacement program provides financial assistance to homeowners with low to moderate income, enabling them to address essential repairs. Partial funding for the program comes from federal Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).
A list of approved contractors that will perform the rehab work was approved and passed by the Dearborn City Council on May 6, 2025.
More than 1,400 applications were received by eligible homeowners who applied for the program since applications were first opened in September 2024. The City is pausing new applications until it completes review of all existing applicants.
The first 10 homes that met all criteria and exhibited the greatest need for repair have been selected. These include homes that have crumbling exteriors that pose direct safety hazards. The City will directly contact all 10 homeowners by May 19, to notify them of their eligibility and schedule construction to begin in the coming months.
Homeowners who have applied to the program but have not yet been contacted by the City of Dearborn regarding their eligibility are advised that the City is still selecting homes for eligibility and will be notifying additional homeowners by July 1 of their status. The City appreciates the continued patience and understanding of all applicants while they continue to work through all 1,400 applications.
