City of Dearborn implements digital alerting technology to improve roadway safety
Published Jan. 14, 2025
The City of Dearborn announced today that it is activating Safety Cloud®, the largest commercially deployed V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) safety network and digital alerting service from HAAS Alert, on 300 of the City’s fire, police, EMS, and public works vehicles.
Safety Cloud by HAAS Alert delivers real-time safety notifications from emergency vehicles, work zones, tow trucks, and other active road hazards to millions of drivers every day. This technology, which is embedded in new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Volkswagen vehicles, as well as Apple Maps and Waze navigation apps, is designed to improve roadway safety in communities like Dearborn by instantly alerting drivers to emergency and public works vehicles, making it easier and safer to deliver public and emergency services.
The alerts make roads safer by increasing driver awareness of nearby hazards, which has been proven to reduce the risk of preventable collisions by 90%.
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “Our administration is working around the clock to make our roads safer. HAAS Alert will enable our first responders' vehicles to communicate with others on the road to not only help prevent collisions, but also ensure our responders are arriving at their destination as quickly as possible.”
The City-wide Safety Cloud deployment is the first expansion of the Mayor’s Smart City efforts into its roadway system and vehicles. The project builds on sweeping digital transformation projects across Dearborn led by Mayor Hammoud's vision, including digitizing workflows for City’s employees, City services, and offering access to core citizen-services in multiple languages online.
Safety Cloud will also enable Dearborn departments to collect and monitor essential traffic safety data to help develop traffic safety strategies and best practices, and help them anticipate traffic effects during emergency response.
HAAS Alert CEO Cory Hohs stated, “We're thrilled to be able to kick off this partnership with the City of Dearborn and support the Mayor’s mission of a safer and smarter city. Dearborn is central to the history of automotive innovation and remains the home of one of the world’s most beloved automotive brands. It’s no surprise that they’re boldly joining this movement into the next chapter in connected transportation, which is ultimately going to save lives.”
Dearborn joins thousands of crews around the world, including public safety fleets, incident response service providers, construction crews, and infrastructure, that are protected by Safety Cloud.
Mayor Hammoud will participate in an Automotive Innovation event Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at Newlab in Detroit, where he will make additional remarks on Dearborn’s Smart City efforts and commitment to resident safety. Newlab is located at 2050 15th St.
