Dearborn Police investigate fatal assault; suspect charged

On August 19, 2026, at approximately 7:46 p.m., Dearborn Police responded to a residence in the 6500 block of Theisen Street regarding a reported assault.

Upon arrival, officers located a seriously injured victim following an altercation between two family members inside the residence. Dearborn Fire Department personnel treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Following an investigation by Dearborn Police, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the following charges against 43-year-old Dearborn resident Mohammed Rustom:

  • Assault with Intent to Murder
  • Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder

On August 20, 2026, Rustom was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Mark Somers in Dearborn’s 19th District Court. Bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety. Rustom is scheduled to appear for a Probable Cause Conference on September 2, 2026.

On August 22, 2026, after Rustom’s arraignment on the initial charges, the 64-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries. In light of the victim’s death, Dearborn Police will submit the case to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of additional or amended charges.

Rustoms is currently being held in Wayne County Jail, pending additional charges.

Chief Issa Shahin stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Our investigators will continue working closely with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure the individual responsible is held accountable through the justice system.”

This remains an active investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
