The City of Dearborn today announced plans to open applications for a new program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to empower and support women in the community seeking to bolster their workforce skills, professional skills, or start new businesses.

Implemented in partnership with Arab American Women’s Business Council (AAWBC), the Dearborn WORKS (Women’s Opportunity to Realize their Knowledge and Skills) initiative is geared towards women in Dearborn, especially those who are new to the United States and/or Arab American, who are seeking employment opportunities or advancement.

Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “We believe women are the heart of the economic motor and small business economy that drives the city. When you empower women, you uplift entire communities. Dearborn WORKS is our commitment to ensuring all women in Dearborn have a clear pathway to achieve their business and career goals.”

After successfully completing an application process overseen by the Dearborn Department of Economic Development, women enrolled in the program will have access to financial literacy courses, professional development workshops, an eight-week intensive business boot camp, networking opportunities, and much more. Graduates will be connected with further training opportunities and resources as they enter the workforce.

Jameleh Haidous of the AAWBC leadership team added, “Partnering with the City of Dearborn on the Dearborn WORKS program marks a pivotal step forward in empowering women entrepreneurs and professionals to solidify their aspirations into impactful, sustainable businesses or into fulfilling careers. This program will serve as a hub of knowledge, mentorship, and resources paving the way for more women to thrive in our community. We are proud to be partners in this journey, championing innovation and creating a stronger, more inclusive future.”

Women who complete the program and are looking to start their own businesses may also qualify for seed money investments for branding strategy, data analytics, digital marketing, licensing fees, networking expenses, and legal and administrative fees for their new ventures. AAWBC will oversee the utilization of seed funding by participants to ensure compliance with City and DOL parameters.

AAWBC will begin accepting applications for the women's boot camp program starting Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, with applications closing on Monday, Dec. 1.
