Dearborn celebrates honorees at 72nd Annual Sports Awards Ceremony

The Dearborn Department of Parks & Recreation Commission honored generations of outstanding local athletes and sports enthusiasts and welcomed new inductees into the City of Dearborn's Special Awards Hall of Fame & Sports Legends Hall of Fame at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 16, 2025. 

The annual Van Patrick Memorial Award was presented to the top student-athletes of the year nominated from each of the four high schools in Dearborn. All candidates were evaluated and selected by the Dearborn Parks & Recreation Commission. The 2025 honorees are:

  • Mahdi Sabbagh from Dearborn High School
  • Maisy Gerlach from Edsel Ford High School

 

 

 

 

New inductees to the Sports Legends Hall of Fame:

  • Mark Shooshanian
  • Susan Sommerville Courtright

The Special Awards Hall of Fame honoree:

  • Larry Martin

The ceremony also honored the Middle School Student-Athletes of
the Year, which include:

  • Layla Hamade and Mohamed Chammout from Bryant
  • Madelyn Willis and Stanley Wieckowski from Divine Child
  • Hadeel Almoussa and Haider Aljanaby from Lowrey
  • Hasna Mused and Ilyas Munassar from Salina
  • Akyra Gambrell and James Meloche from Smith
  • Leighton Akers and Saif Almahmoud from Stout
  • Zaynab Ballout and Jawad Bazzi from Unis
  • Helena Kreis and Haitham Alhanbasy from Woodworth

The High School Student-Athletes of the Year were recognized for their extraordinary athletic achievements, classroom accomplishments, and community contributions. The event also honored the Middle School Student-Athletes of the Year with the Mickey Patrick Award for their successes in the athletic and academic arenas.
