DEARBORN, MI — The Dearborn Police Department has released its year-to-date statistics for August 2024, which indicate significant decreases in criminal incidents recorded in the city compared to the same time last year.

Dearborn has experienced a total decrease of around 10 percent from last year across twelve different crime categories analyzed by Dearborn Police. As of Aug. 8. 2024, the year-to-date numbers collected by the department revealed a 46 percent dip in larcenies of items stolen from vehicles, a 20 percent decrease in car theft, a 23 percent decrease in robberies, and a 12 percent decrease in aggravated assault, among other achievements.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud praised the department on the outcomes of this report, “As Mayor and as a lifelong Dearborn resident, I am endlessly grateful for the members of the Dearborn Police Department for their tireless efforts in keeping our neighborhoods safe. Under Chief Shahin’s leadership, the department has made incredible strides in building trust through successful community policing initiatives, implementing state-of-the-art technology, and prioritizing exceptional police training and staff development.”

The statistics also reveal a slight 2 percent increase in larcenies, and a 24 percent spike in minor retail fraud (largely attributed to shoplifting incidents occurring at the Walmart located in Dearborn). Vehicular crashes remain largely consistent with last year, with the department recording a total of 64 more crashes (2264 - 2200) as compared to the same time last year. The department also responded to 5 percent more mental health calls.

Dearborn Chief of Police Issa Shahin stated, “We’re pleased to see that our continued public safety and enforcement efforts have yielded positive results and a drop in incidents in Dearborn over the past 12 months. The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we will continue our work ensuring the highest level of safety in our neighborhoods and on our streets. The consistency of vehicle crashes and reckless driving incidents is staggering, and it is on all of us to improve in the coming year. To do so, we need the community to work alongside us to keep our city safe, especially by instilling safe driving habits in young drivers.”

The Dearborn Police Department maintains a publicly-accessible Transparency Dashboard with several incident statistics such as total calls for service, citations, and traffic incidents that is updated monthly.
