Dearborn’s first-ever community health survey, now live

The City of Dearborn Department of Public Health Department (DPH) announced the implementation of the City’s inaugural community-wide health survey today, Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2024. The Dearborn Community Health Needs Assessment (DCHNA) is part of a larger effort led by DPH to understand the community health needs by gathering diverse stakeholder engagement to guide policies, programming, and future investments by the City.

Developed in partnership with the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), the DCHNA survey prompts participants to anonymously answer questions on demographics, health status, healthcare access and utilization, mental health and wellbeing, and the community environment. Community-wide participation in the DCHNA will provide DPH with updated data that reflects the true needs of Dearborn’s often underrepresented community and support the City’s work to secure federal funding and investment.

Ali Abazeed, Dearborn’s Chief Public Health Officer and Director of Public Health, stated, “When we launched DPH, we did so pledging not to outsource our health responsibility any longer. Since that launch, we have been diligently working on this survey, and today's announcement marks an exciting milestone in our mission to develop programs tailored to meet the needs of Dearborn residents.”

All Dearborn residents ages 18 and older are eligible to participate in the DCHNA survey, which is offered in English and Arabic. The first 1,000 respondents who complete the survey and meet all eligibility requirements will receive a $10 gift card.

Hayat Hachem, DPH’s Data Scientist and project lead added, “The Community Health Needs Assessment is a crucial part of our work to define public health in Dearborn and set a course for community health that reflects the needs and desires of our residents moving forward. To gain a complete picture of health in Dearborn, and fill gaps in data that specifically address our health needs, we need our residents’ help.”

Funding for the DCHNA program is provided by DMC Foundation, federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars, and other grants awarded to DPH.
