The City of Dearborn will honor the nation’s flag at a Flag Day ceremony on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Ford Field Park, 22501 Cherry Hill St, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The commemoration will involve retiring tattered American flags no longer fit for public display using American Legion burning protocols.
The annual ceremony, held in consultation with the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC), will mark the anniversary of the Continental Congress's adoption of the nation’s flag in 1777. The public is invited to attend the event, which will take place at Ford Field Park at the top of the hill at 22051 Cherry Hill St.
City accepting damaged, discolored flags for proper disposal year-round
To ensure that damaged and discolored American flags are appropriately and honorably retired, the City of Dearborn hosts a year-round collection for flags no longer fit for display.
All flags the City receives will be provided to Stars for Our Troops, an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense for appropriate flag retirement. Stars for Our Troops processes and cleans American flags that are no longer suitable for display before carefully cutting out and embroidering the stars on them. The flags will then be shipped to active-duty military, veterans, first responders, and their families with a note of support and gratitude.
Residents may deliver tattered, torn, and faded flags to the front service desk at the Dearborn Administrative Center, 16901 Michigan Ave. Flags will be collected year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., excluding City holidays.
Stars on donated flags should be no bigger than 2 inches across. Flags should be labeled “Made in the USA” or made by a flag company member of NIFDA or FMAA.
