The Dearborn Police Department announced it will be submitting findings from an investigation into a Dec. 20, 2024 traffic incident on Ford Rd, which left one pedestrian minor in critical condition, to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
On Friday morning, a 15-year-old Fordson High School student was attempting to legally cross Ford Rd at the intersection of Ford and Schaefer Rd when a Jeep Grand Cherokee travelling westbound collided with her.
Dearborn Fire Department personnel rendered aid at the scene and rushed the collision victim to a nearby hospital where she remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery.
Investigators determined through camera footage that the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 19-year-old Dearborn resident, failed to stop at the red light before colliding with the pedestrian.
Crash site analysis was used to determine that speed was likely a factor in the collision. Additionally, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was equipped with an illegal window tint on the front windshield, dangerous due to the obscured vision it causes.
Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “My heart is with the family of this tragic incident and we will pray that the young student makes a quick and full recovery. Tackling speeding and reckless driving remains top priority for our police department. We continue to make investments in a number of traffic calming measures across our neighborhoods. With all this said and done, we need parents to have serious conversations with young drivers in their household. Responsibility and accountability needs to be instilled.”
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated, “Dearborn Police continues to use every available resource in this ongoing investigation. We want to thank area businesses for providing video footage that aided investigators. Incidents such as these are completely avoidable if drivers adhere to basic traffic safety laws. We will continue to stay vigilant in enforcing those laws on our roads, and will pursue accountability against reckless drivers to bring justice to their victims.”
The Dearborn Police Department worked with officials at the Dearborn Public Schools district following the incident to make grief counseling and other resources available to both staff and students.
