At a press conference on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, City of Dearborn officials announced continued and significant reductions in violent crime in Dearborn.
Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud, joined by Police Chief Issa Shahin and City Council President Michael T. Sareini, shared new crime statistics showing a sustained decrease in criminal activity across the city over the past two years.
According to the Dearborn Police Department, violent crime declined by 14% in 2025 alone, contributing to a cumulative 20% reduction in offenses such as robbery and assault since 2023. Crime reductions include a 40% decrease in burglaries, a 22% decrease in robberies, and a 30% decrease in vehicle thefts.
“These are tangible improvements in public safety made possible by the men and women of the Dearborn Police Department, who we place our trust in,” Mayor Hammoud said. “We reinforce that trust each year when we make historic investments that provide our officers with the manpower, training, and tools they need to keep our community safe.”
Chief Shahin recognized the work of Dearborn Police officers, whose dedication and commitment has yielded record improvements in public safety in the city. The department is now staffed at a historic 191 officers.
Shahin also credited the reductions to strategic investments in staffing; training; and modern technology, including the creation of a state-of-the-art integrated real-time crime center; Drone as First Responder program; new police cruisers; updated police equipment such as translation-capable body cameras; and enhanced investigative tools.
“These investments allow us not only to prevent crime, but to quickly and successfully bring investigations to a conclusion and provide justice for victims and their families,” Shahin said. “Our officers’ deep ties to the community and commitment to service play a critical role in building trust and keeping Dearborn safe.”
Council President Sareini emphasized the collaboration between City Council, the Administration, and the Police Department to ensure public safety remains fully funded and prioritized.
“Smart investments and strong partnerships are making a real difference for Dearborn residents,” Sareini said. “We remain committed to supporting a fully resourced Police Department. Myself and my Council colleague will remain steadfast in supporting our Department to be one of the top, most cutting-edge in the state.”
