How to Submit for Re-Occupancy

  • Submit a re-occupancy application to the city.

  • The re-occupancy application will be reviewed to ensure the proposed use of the business meets the requirements of the zoning ordinance.

  • If the re-occupancy application is approved, the Economic Development Department will reach out to schedule the inspections.

  • Any desired permitted work must be completed as a first step.

  • Depending on the type of re-occupancy request, 1-7 different inspectors will need to inspect the property. These include inspectors for: the building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, backflow, sanitation, and the fire departments.

  • All building utilities MUST be turned on and in working order.

  • If violations are identified during the inspection, the city will provide inspection reports outlining the specific correction requirements. These corrections must be completed and approved before a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued.

  • Inspection report items will need to be completed and reinspected within 90 days. During that time, you may not occupy that space or be open to business.

  • Inspection reports also will indicate if any permits will be required to complete any report items. Permits must be pulled by a contractor registered with the City of Dearborn. Learn more information on permits and all applications

  • Once all items on the inspection reports have been completed, please email city staff to schedule re-inspections at newbusiness@dearbon.gov.

  • After the inspection report items have been approved, any related permits are closed, and all fees are paid, the Business Certificate of Occupancy will be prepared. The C / O will be emailed to the business owner if no other licenses are required for that business type. Please allow approximately seven business days for processing.

  • Some businesses will need to obtain a city business license from the city clerk. Please see the link for more information regarding business license requirements. The Business will obtain their C / O when they come in to speak to the Clerk's office regarding their business license(s).
