Nominations sought for front yard Dearborn Sustainable Gardens awards through June 28

DEARBORN, MI - The Dearborn City Beautiful Commission invites Dearborn community members to nominate households with exceptional sustainable landscaping in front yards for the second-annual Sustainable Gardens awards category of the yearly Residential Standard of Excellence Awards (RSOE).  In coordination with National Pollinator Week, which began on June 17, 2024, residents are encouraged to nominate homes maintaining rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and other sustainable landscaping features through June 28, 2024.

The City Beautiful Commission, with direction from Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud, aims to promote sustainable gardens and landscaping as a way to sustainably enhance the local environment and improve public health, sustain crucial pollinator populations - like bees and butterflies, and reduce the impact of flooding, especially through the use of residential rain gardens.

This new recognition program is a companion to the traditional Residential Standard of Excellence Awards, which the commission has presented for 45 years.

Volunteer commissioners will review nominated sustainable gardens and landscaping and choose up to 10 outstanding examples for recognition, all of which will receive a special lawn sign from the Commission. Selected honorees will also be invited to a dinner in Feb. 2025 for all 2024 City Beautiful Commission awardees hosted by the Commission and Mayor Hammoud.

Residents can self-nominate at this link or by calling 313-943-2150 through June 28.

About National Pollinator Week

National Pollinator Week is an annual event celebrated internationally to raise awareness about pollinators and how to protect them. Pollinators are vital organisms that help plants reproduce by transferring pollen from male to female flowers.

Pollinators include bees, butterflies, moths, bats, beetles, and hummingbirds. All of these benefit from residents who create and maintain healthy gardens with native plants that are designed to support them.
